AAMC Medical Education Fall Webinar Series

AAMC Medical Education Fall Webinar Series
What's Next for the Core EPAs? Reflection on the AAMC pilot and the Future of Competency-based Education in Medical School
Wednesday, November 30, 2022 - 11:00 am

In their seminal work, Ray Pawson and Nick Tilley describe a realistic approach to evaluation. Evaluations are designed to learn from programs and initiatives to modify and improve their effectiveness. Realist philosophy promotes the goal of detachment and objectivity in evaluation; however, the realistic evaluation framework is not as reductionist as a strict scientific approach to evaluation. Essentially, evaluation needs to be realistic and is an applied form of research that does not posit absolutes but options. Therefore, Realistic Evaluation is often times summed up as “What works for Whom and in What circumstances”. This session will provide attendees with a brief background and structure of the Realistic Evaluation framework. Attendees will then work through Context, Mechanism, and Outcomes of real-world educational examples. At the end of the session, participants will be able to apply a realistic framework to their educational projects and initiatives.

Presenters: Catherine L. Coe, Gary Beck Callaghan, and Victoria Gorski
